SCAND Auxillary History

1975 – The idea for SCAND  (Senior Citizens Agency of Northern Door)was born when a group of people decided that a nursing home was a much needed facility in northern Door County.

1981 – SCAND opened its doors with 20 residents. Auxiliary assistance was needed, resulting in a charter membership of more than 100 men and women. Among the many volunteer duties they performed for patients were hair and nail care, letter writing, crafting, birthday party coordination, Christmas decorating, reading, and feeding patients who needed assistance.

1991 – Rae Porter, a long-time worker in the Auxiliary, began selling used clothing once a week in the All-Purpose Room. It was her dream to one day have a resale shop operated by the Auxiliary. In June of 1991, Regina Daubner donated the use of an empty store in Ellison Bay, enabling the Auxiliary to open its first resale shop, named Bargains Unlimited.

1993 – Scandia Village Retirement Center was sold to the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society, the nation’s largest nonprofit retirement center operator. “Good Sam” had managed the center prior to purchase. The facility is now known at Good Samaritan – Scandia Village. The Auxiliary continues to operate under the SCAND INC. corporation.

1995 – The Auxiliary was able to construct their own building on the campus of Scandia Village. Due to the overwhelming success of the store, the original 15-year mortgage was fully paid off in only 18-months with a mortgage burning celebration marking the accomplishment.
